On many campuses around the country, with spring semester comes spring recruitment. It’s a bittersweet time during which your semester-long dirty rushing and sneaky scheming to outdo your rival houses come down to the nitty-gritty. While it involves many excruciatingly long hours, an irritatingly small amount of sleep, and far too many boring, fake-nice conversations with girls you couldn’t care less about, spring recruitment may be one of the best things to happen to your sorority yet this year.
1. Built-in Sorority Bonding Time
Depending on where you go to school and what demands you have on your social life, you probably haven’t seen many of your sisters for at least a month. Even if you spent your entire break visiting every member of your pledge class, there are still a ton of girls that you probably hardly ever see. During recruitment, however, because you have to be at your sorority house until 5AM multiple nights in a row, you actually have time to bond with the girls you don’t know that well because they never come to anything, you secretly hated them for no reason, or they just aren’t a part of your typical entourage. By the end of this hell week incredibly fun bonding experience, you will form bonds with sisters you ordinarily wouldn’t have. Rush crushes occur within house too.
2. You Remember Why You Joined In The First Place
No matter who you are, or how much you love your chapter, there has probably been a time in your sorority experience when you thought you couldn’t take it anymore. Whether it was a totally unnecessary call to standards, or a dress that was ruined after you lent it out to a pledge sister, we’ve all been there. However, as you’re going through each round of recruitment, you’re forced to remember all of the good things. You’re constantly discussing how awesome your sisterhood is, explaining how inspiring your philanthropies are, recalling amazing parties and swaps, and looking at adorable pictures of your sisters doing incredible things. It reminds you what the sorority experience is all about. Nothing shakes the blues of a typical Greek grind like hearing how amazing you are multiple times a day.
3. New Members
Of course, this is the most important thing. BABIES! This is what you’ve been looking forward to and working hard for all year long. There is nothing more amazing than finding the most perfect, darling, gorgeous little angels (but not quite as perfect as your pledge sisters were as freshmen) and welcoming them home for the first time. For the next few months they are yours to craft for, spoil, and corrupt. And let’s not forget that new members mean new additions to the family. Whether you’re a big-to-be, or your family’s matriarch that’s ready to add a great-grandlittle to your family tree before you graduate, this is an exciting time!
Even though recruitment is a crazy experience, and at times you just want to hire some cheap labor to do all the less-than-glamourous work it takes to transform your house in a matter of hours, at the end of it all, it’s so worth it. When you think about it, what could be better than spending time with your best friends all day as you constantly remind each other how fabulous your lives are? Absolutely nothing.
