Well, we probably should have seen this coming. In light of the situation at OU with SAE, we should have known that it was only a matter of time until it would come to light that other fraternity chapters were engaging in similar disgusting behavior. First up: Sigma Chi at Westminster College.
While the chapter had been under investigation for hazing activities by its headquarters, things apparently became a lot more serious this week when it was revealed that three chapter members were involved in an extremely racist Facebook conversation. Westminster College senior Timothy Aldred told ABC 17, “There was a report released by a sophomore member of Sigma Chi with an audio recording of a pledge that night, screen shots from a Facebook page, just horrifically racist. I’ve seen some of them, horrifically racist, violent, just disgusting screenshot, disgusting comments being made.” Aldred backed up these statements by showing the screenshots, which included racist comments regarding the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, to the reporter. Sigma Chi chapter president Jacob Appelbaum confirmed to the station that the three people involved in the screenshot Facebook conversation are indeed chapter members.
In a statement Wednesday night, Westminster College President Barney Forsythe said, “Earlier today, Westminster College received new evidence of offensive comments posted between Sigma Chi members on a private social media page. In light of this new information, Westminster and SCIH resolved to extend the chapter’s suspension indefinitely.”
Sigh. So who’s next?.
