“If I worried what every bitch in New York was saying about me, I’d never leave the house,” said Samantha Jones, the oldest and arguably wisest of the four friends of “Sex and the City.” Samantha has been kicking ass and putting bitches in their places since the summer of 1958. She gives zero fucks, will try anything once, and chooses great lovers over great love.
Samantha believes in living her life without the pressure of desperately searching for the “right guy.” She doesn’t need a man, and frankly, she knows she will never find one she loves more than she loves than herself. She’s a badass on the job front, as she owns her own public relations company and repeatedly refuses to take any bullshit from misogynistic pricks on the work field. She is undoubtedly the most sexually promiscuous of the group, and accompanies this attribute with a hot platter of I Don’t Give A Fuck. Despite inevitable judgement from friends and peers, she maintains an attitude similar to a man’s…and that’s totally okay with me.
Her most admirable quality, however, is definitely her undying loyalty to her friends. She offers nonjudgmental support to Carrie during her affair with a married Big and offers a much-needed spa day to Miranda in the midst of Brady’s infancy. She’s always there to help her friends through tough times and she reminds them that they are better than whatever undeserving asshole who screwed them over.
In the last season, Samantha kicks breast cancer’s ass. She faces her abrupt diagnosis head on, displaying impressively few weak moments during her treatment. She dons outrageous hats, wigs, and scarves after losing her hair. She refuses to let her sickness get the best of her, and even throws a standing ovation-worthy bitchfit about hot flashes onstage at a cancer benefit dinner.
In a world where men still make more money and hold more power, we could use a few more SJs. She takes feminism to the next level by capitalizing the message of sexual freedom, all while maintaining gender equality in the workplace. Though her views often differ from those around her, Samantha Jones is unapologetically herself. She doesn’t care what people think about her, and she takes pride in being a shamelessly self-assured cougar. She does what she wants to do, works for what she wants to have, and remains loyal to those she cares about. She radiates confidence and is proud of her unorthidox lifestyle.
We could all learn a few things from Samantha Jones. She tells us that it’s alright to be confident in the decisions we make, whether or not those around us agree with them. Samantha exemplifies girl power to the max, and doesn’t take flak from anyone, especially about her free-sex lifestyle. Society constantly bombards women with false messages of self-respect and dignity, deeming those who fool around as “sluts.” Don’t let that be you. Don’t let anyone criticize you for actions that would be excusable for a man. Be a Samantha in a world of Charlottes. Take advantage of your ability to chose to do what you want, regardless of what society says.
