It’s one of the unfair truths of the world that eating like crap and being lazy don’t make you skinny and hot. I know, it doesn’t make sense, right? Why does skipping the gym feel so good if it doesn’t also make you look good? I know that no matter how hard I try to convince myself to go, I’m always going to end up skipping the gym, and so for years, I’d resigned myself to a less-than-ideal physique. Little did I know that all I had to do was run a bath and I’d have a six-pack in no time.
An absolute genius researcher at Loughborough University, Dr. Steve Faulkner, decided to look into just how many calories you can burn by taking a hot bath, and thank goodness he did. In addition to preventing Type II diabetes, taking a hot bath for an hour literally burns the same amount of calories as going on a half hour walk. According to people smarter than me, this works by “passive heating” – essentially, instead of raising your body temperature through exercise, you can just hop in the bathtub instead and it’s essentially the same as going to a gym.
Your body really needs to heat up for this to work, so you’ll still be sweating out some calories in a 104-degree tub. Regardless, this is a compromise I’m more than willing to make, considering I can lay in the tub with a book and a glass of wine instead of dragging myself to my apartment gym, where I hear that consuming alcohol while on the treadmill is frowned upon. Now all I have to do is convince myself that baths are actually worth taking, and I’ll be on my way to Instagram model status in no time at all..
