Hey guys. What’s up? How was spring break? Good? Did you throw up in your bed after too many tequila shots, and laugh about it, but actually feel a little bit scared that you vommed in your sleep? Did you hook up with some guy from the University Of Someplace Halfway Across The Country and convince yourself that you’d be together based on your 5-day trist, if only you were in the same location? Did you go to a strip club, even though you’re in a group of six girls? Keep this all in mind while I tell you all about Analisa Wolff.
Analisa is a Kappa Delta at USC. She went to the Dominican Republic for spring break — but not for the beaches like you heathens. She went on a mission trip with the Sister Island Project. Feeling guilty yet? Don’t worry, you will soon. Analisa stayed with a family in the DR and fell in love with a little girl named Melissa. The first thing she noticed about Melissa was how smart she was.
While many of the younger children couldn’t understand my terrible Spanish accent, Melissa understood everything I said. She even helped me communicate with the people that didn’t understand me. And as soon as Melissa got her hands on my phone, she knew exactly what she was doing. I looked over and in just minutes she had beaten the level on Candy Crush that I had been stuck on for over a month!
But soon, it became obvious that Melissa was smaller than all the other children. Her hair and skin were slightly off color. When she began asking questions, Analisa quickly learned the harsh truth: “está enferma.” Leukemia.
Melissa is currently surviving off of monthly blood transfusions covered by the Sister Island Project. These are only about $50 a month, but what she really needs is bone marrow, for which she’ll need to travel to a more developed country. The surgery itself will cost $30,000, and it simply isn’t affordable for the family. Analisa swore to herself she’d do everything in her power to raise the money for Melissa, and now she is.
