Last week, TSM reported “Best News Ever: Pumpkin Spice Lattes Are Premiering EARLY At Starbucks This Year,” but unfortunately, we’re here to burst this bubble of excitement. A food blogger has reported on what is actually in a Pumpkin Spice Latte (AKA a PSL) and it ain’t pretty.
First up, there’s actually no pumpkin in a PSL. No biggie, right? We’re sure all of that deliciousness comes from something else good.
Not so much. Instead, two of the ingredients are actually cancer-causing carcinogens. A PSL has two servings of caramel color level IV in it, which was found to give mice cancer in a government-funded study. Secondly, the brand of milk used in a PSL is from a firm which feeds its cows genetically modified food, such as corn, soy, and cottonseed, which is also linked to cancer.
If that isn’t enough to make you reconsider that PSL, let’s talk about the calorie implications. There are more than 50 grams of sugar in a non-fat grande Pumpkin Spice Latte. That’s more than 15 chocolate chip cookies or two slices of cheesecake.
Maybe it’s time to switch to tea?
