Moms are usually annoyingly right about everything, but when it comes to men, you probably don’t want the kind of men she wants for you. A new study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s Department of Psychology found that moms and sisters want you to settle down with a boring guy who sucks in bed. It’s called the “Juliet effect,” based on a line in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Lady Capulet (Juliet’s mother) tries to convince her daughter to take an interest in Paris, a boring but rich guy who comes from a good family, by saying “Verona’s summer hath not such a flower.” Romeo is sexier than Paris, but this theory suggests mothers and sisters prefer for you to end up with someone dull but dependable.
Why does your mom want to make sure you never have an orgasm again? Because that’s gross for a mom to care too much about her daughters sex life, but also for other reasons. Your mom obviously wants you to be happy, but she’s perhaps even more interested in making sure that your future kids will be well off, too. After all, it’s her genes she’s passing on, and so she wants you to be with somebody who can “provide benefits for the family in general.”
To test this theory, Professor Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair and Professor Robert Biegler asked female students and their sisters to rank 133 characteristics that describe the perfect partner for themselves and their sisters. They asked mothers and daughters to fill out the same questionnaire and found that the results proved their theory correct.
From Broadly:
When choosing partners for themselves, women would go for men who were sincere, humorous, charming, fun, and good in bed. When picking for their daughters or sisters, however, they’d perceive characteristics like being understanding, responsible, and sensible as more important. Basically, your mom and sister want you to marry a boring dude who’ll never cheat and help you put up shelves. But when it comes to their choices, they’d go for sexy boys who are good at sex.
It makes sense. If I had to pick a guy for my sister, my first thought definitely wouldn’t be “a sexy dude with a decent cock who knows how to use it,” but I can’t lie, that requirement is pretty high up on my list.
“What we see is that people go for the more sexy partner for themselves,” Kennair says, “but go for someone sensible for their sisters.”
So maybe your mom is right — you should end up with the dependable, average-looking guy who will be a good father and boring lover. It’s the safe way to go.
But if you ask me, I’d pick Big over Aidan any day. .
