Recruitment is a very special time in sorority women’s lives where we wake up earlier than we do during the school year, wear more makeup than we knew was physically possible, and talk about things we have never cared about in our lives. When it comes to recruitment topics, you can pretty much expect to have the same conversations that you’ll have at Thanksgiving, just with the roles reversed. Asking some random girl her major and if she’s liking recruitment so far will only hurt your soul even more. So here a few of the most interesting questions that will spark a good conversation and at least make you want not want to scream every time someone says, “I’m a communications major.”
What’s Your Favorite TV Show?
A very simple, easy question that literally 100 percent of girls can answer. It’s not something that will make your standards chair pass out, but at least it won’t make you fall asleep mid-talking. Ask her what she’s watching, what she’s watching it on, and if the stars align, you’ll have something to talk about. And let’s be real, if she doesn’t watch “Gossip Girl,” “The Office,” or “Game of Thrones” then should she even really be your sister?
What’s Your Favorite Movie?
Just like the TV shows, asking someone what their favorite movie is an easy conversation starter that’s bound to lead to someone not horrible to discuss. You can find out if she’s a romcom girl or comedy lady, which can say more about who she is than the usual “how’s recruitment going” conversation. Bonus? You’ll get at least one bomb movie recommendation which will make this whole thing worthwhile.
Who’s Your Favorite Celebrity?
Everyone has a celebrity. Everyone. It doesn’t matter who it is, it’s someone to talk about besides just this random freshman girl who’s terrified of you. Considering we talk about celebrities 99 percent of the time, there’s no reason to deviate from that now. If you’re lucky she’ll be on the same page as you are with her obsession and you can spend your time debating Korney and Scott’s relationship versus what you’re favorite philanthropy is.
What Did You Do This Summer?
I know this is a pretty cliché question, but a surprising amount of people don’t ask it. You’ll learn a few things from this question. First, what kind of things she’s into. And secondly, you’ll learn whether or not she has a lake house, a beach house, or connections to royal families in Europe. I’m not saying that’ll get her a bid. But I am saying that it’s a hell of a lot more fun to talk about traveling around France than how tiring it is to walk around to different houses all day.
What Are You Most Looking Forward To About College?
So in her defense, she has to give a somewhat bullshit answer here. If she’s smart, she’ll know that she can’t say that she’s most looking forward to boys, partying, and drinking (even if it’s the truth). But odds are she’ll say something interesting enough to go off of. Whether it’s a club she wants to get involved in, a group of people she wants to meet, or just that she can have more independence, it’s an easy topic to branch off of when you’ve asked everything else.
Who’s Your Role Model?
I know it seems tryhard. I know it seems stupid. But this question at least puts your foot in the door to talk about someone other than yourselves. Whether it’s a comedian, an author, or some scientist you’ve never heard of, you can pretty much gauge exactly who she is by who she looks up to.
What’s Your Drink?
Jk. Wait until after initiation for this one..
