If “7 Years” Was Written About Sorority Life

You’re lying if you say that beautifully sad song by Lukas Graham isn’t stuck in your head. And if it’s not, well here ya go:

Are you crying? Because I am. I was having a perfectly good time being recklessly irresponsible in college and then this asshole comes along and makes me actually *think*. In a few short months, the older girls who used to intimidate but now inspire me are leaving. In a few short months, yet another year of my collegiate career is behind me. Soon I will be the one leaving this town and wondering how I will be remembered, or if I will be remembered at all. Maybe I just overthink everything, but as much as this song hits hard while thinking about the “real” world, it hits harder when it is applied to our world.

Once I was eighteen years old, my mama told me,
“go make yourself a Greek or you’ll be lonely,”
Once I was eighteen years old.

It was a big, big choice, but we all rushed together.
Pushing our bodies to the limits, we were always tired.
By Bid Day, so happy to receive my letters.
Initiation — relieved to finally call y’all my sisters!

Once I was nineteen years old, my biggie told me,
“Go get yourself a lil’ or you’ll be lonely.”
Once I was nineteen years old.

I always had big dreams, like my sisters before me.
So I joined exec and finally started feeling happy!
Something about this glory, just always seemed so for me,
’cause all those I really love will always help and guide me.

Once I was twenty years old, Am I getting old?
I watched my little’s little stand before me.
Once I was twenty years old.

I’ll always love my house, biased towards the others.
‘Cause I know that we’re the greatest and only getting better.
Welcome the new PNMs, at least those I favor.
And if we don’t meet before I leave,
I hope I’ll see you later!

I’m so excited about this, recruitment brought new babies to me.
Now I can show them the bars, I will tell them my stories.
Most of my girls with me, at the campus we are ruling.
And some of them they had to graduate, my sisters I’m so sorry!

Soon I’ll be graduation goals, my biggie she’s long gone.
Remember me little ’cause soon my time here will be done.
Promise you won’t forget that you are my little one.
I hope you please come and visit once or twice a month!

Soon I’ll be graduation goals, will I think the world is cold?
Or will I still have my fam to support me?
Soon I’ll be graduation goals.

Once I was eighteen years old, my mama told me,
“go make yourself a Greek or you’ll be lonely.”

Always remember sisterhood is for life. Keep being a support system for your graduating sisters and let them know that even as they move on from their home, they will always have you in their hearts.
