Notice anything about your Starbucks bill lately? If you’re anything like me, probably not. By the time I’ve ordered my drink, I am far too consumed with the anticipation on getting my hands on the delicious, life-sustaining blend of caffeine and sugar to check over the bill. To make matters worse, with the ability to pay directly from your phone – it’s like you’re not even spending money (which is my princess rational for not paying attention to the price).
However, if you’re any bit more responsible with money than I am (kudos to you!), you might have noticed the slight hike in the cost of fueling your addiction. Certain cold drinks and bakery items have increased by $0.10 to $.30. While a rep for the coffee chain stated that the price increase does not affect approximately 90% of the beverages, they said that we can expect to see the average bill raise by 0.5%.
Most customers seem outraged by the $0.30 increase to their (already overpriced) frappucinos.
This price change is the second one this year, and the fourth one in the past three years. Back in July, prices on their brewed coffee raised between $0.10 – $0.20, and $0.10 – $0.30 on espresso and tea latte drinks. Last year, all prices raised between $0.05 and $0.20, with the average being a $0.10 rise. The year before that, the prices on brewed coffees raised between $0.10 – $0.15, and $0.15 – $0.20 on lattes. Doing some quick math (thanks, high school!), this means that if you are really unlucky, your favorite drink is costing you a dollar more than it did in 2014.
While this price change may not be good for our wallets, it could be for our waistlines. With the drastic rise in prices on some of the items with the most calories, frappucinos and baked goods, it might be easier for us to talk ourselves out of having a 1000 calorie blended dessert in the middle of the day. I can already hearing my crush dress thanking me..
