Designer Handbags and Disney Come Together In The Ugliest Way Possible

Let me start by saying that I am a fan of all things Disney. I’ve got a vast collection of all the stuffed animals stored at my parents’ house, all of the Disney classics are in my DVD collection, and the full soundtrack to The Lion King is on my phone. And while there are like a zillion other places I’d rather go than Disney World for my honeymoon, I still think it’s the happiest place on earth. But Mickey and his pals have committed a crime against fashion that I’m not sure I can forgive.

Yes, that’s right. That hideous bag with mouse ears is a part of the new Disney x Coach collection, which drops June 17th. According to Refinery29, “bags aren’t the only goodies you can look forward to from this sure-to-sell-out collab. Other items include graphic tees; sneakers featuring Coach’s signature hangtag playfully redesigned in the shape of Mickey’s ears; a punky, studded biker jacket; oversized Mickey dolls and shearling beanbags (#need).”

Please note that the #need is not my comment but theirs. I can maybe live with the graphic tees and the kicks, but a studded Mickey biker jacket? Not on my list of must-haves.

Coach Creative Director Stuart Vevers told the site, “Mickey Mouse is one of my earliest memories of American pop — his nostalgic charm, cheekiness, individuality and inherent cool make for the ultimate American icon. I’ve always seen Mickey as a playful rebel at heart and a timeless symbol of joy and creativity. That spirit reinforces the new youthful perspective we are bringing to luxury at Coach.”

Listen, Mr. Vevers, I agree. Mickey is timeless. But I assume that by youthful, you mean that you are marketing to 10-year-olds? Because I’m thinking that no grown woman who can actually afford a Coach bag isn’t going for one with a cartoon on it, never mind giant mouse ears. But then again, there are still people walking around the world in Crocs, so what the hell do I know?
