The holiday season is upon us and like any good sorority girls, we are preparing ourselves to commit to the Winter Wonderland theme. Unpack those ugly sweaters and put on your holiday hats because you need to commit to the season. So you have your themed attire down, but what about the drinks? As much as natty (gag) and Franzia might be a staple in our day-to-day party diets, why let the themes stop with the attire? In order to fully immerse ourselves in the holiday spirit, I bring you the five best holiday inspired drinks perfect any occasion.
Chocolate Peppermint Stick
What’s in it:
• 1.5 ounce of white crème de cacao
• 1 ounce cream
• 1 ounce peppermint schnapps
When to drink it
Garnished with a candy cane and served in a martini glass (or just anything that isn’t a solo cup), these drinks are too sophisticated (read: expensive) to blackout on. They taste great, like actually delicious, so you want to savor them, not speed drink to blackout city. Drink these as a dessert drink after a holiday meal or as a precursor to a winter sisterhood event to get a happy holiday buzz.
Christmas Cookie
What’s in it:
• 1 ounce peppermint schnapps
• 1 ounce Kahlua
• 1 ounce Bailey’s Irish Cream
When to drink it
It’s a creamy drink served cold that pairs great with cookies, it’s basically alcoholic milk. Gather a group a sisters, make a batch of these drinks, grab some freshly baked holiday cookies, and curl up and watch your favorite holiday movie. This drink is great for a girls’ night in, especially when Christmas movies are involved. Bonus points if the holiday cookies are freshly made.
The Grinch
What’s in it:
• 2 ounces Midori
• ½ ounce lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon simple syrup
When to drink it
It shows up lime green, garnished with a cherry, and looks cool AF. It has a light, citrus-y sweet flavor to it with a taste you won’t get sick of. Drink these at a cocktail hour and when a hottie inevitably asks you what you’re drinking, use the name to engage in some witty holiday banter. You’re welcome.
Santa Shot
What’s in it:
• 1 part grenadine syrup
• 1 part crème de menthe
• 1 part peppermint schnapps
When to drink it
This drink requires carefully layering the parts based on their different ‘specific gravity’ to create a shot with distinct red and green sections so instead of spending tons of energy trying to make the shots on your own, just have your friendly neighborhood bartender do it for you. They taste like a candy cane and are deadly. Drink as celebratory shots after you finish your last final so you can blackout in a festive manner.
Mulled Wine
What’s in it:
• 1 bottle red wine
• 1 cup cognac
• ¾ cup sugar
• 2cinnamon sticks
• 3 whole cloves
• 1 tsp grated nutmeg
• 1 vanilla bean
• 1 star anise
• 1 sliced orange
• 1 sliced lemon
When to drink it
This is definitely the most difficult drink on the list, mostly because there are a lot of different ingredients and you have to simmer all the ingredients in a pan for 25 minutes. So while it takes slightly longer to make, it’s 100 percent worth it. This is the perfect drink for the pre-pregame. So while you and all your roommates are getting ready, doing your makeup, and deciding what to wear, casually sip on some mulled wine. It’s fairly high in alcohol content and has a spicy-sweet flavor that will leave you happily buzzed for when you head off to the pregame..
