My university bowling team crushed our opponents due to my average. “the States” was where we were from even though we’d lived overseas more than in “the States”. we dropped everything on the playground to turn towards the flag and stand at attention during reveille and retreat. Dad answered the phone at home using his rank first. One or both of everybody’s parents was a veteran of some war. even today, every 3 years I’m looking to “rotate out” (which drives my wife nuts) and… it’s virtually impossible to make and keep friends, even today.
