Very well said and thought provoking. Hopefully it will help some young women realize the dangers of drinking to the point of incoherency or lost inhibitions or, in almost all cases, poor judgement. Unfortunately many will read articles like this, or listen to counselors and speakers, and nod their heads and vow never to do that again. Until Friday night comes and they swear they’re going to go easy on the shots. Then one drink leads to another, and another, and then you move to a different party or bar, with different people you may not know, and one drink leads to another… And the last drink before you decide to leave alone or with some unknown helpful guy who promises to get you home safely leads to you becoming the face on a flyer which leads to you becoming another statistic. Most of these women are easy targets, victims of opportunity. It’s cruel to put it into words but some are partially responsible for what happened to them after they decided to take that first drink and then broke their vow to stop at a certain point. It’s not easy to stop when you’re having fun. And it’s harder to make the decision to stop, or any sensible decision for that matter, when you’re already wasted. Just like a drunk driver is responsible for having made the decisions to drink, to drink too much, and to drive, so must women, even victims, be held accountable for making similar decisions. Both can lead to very bad endings. But both are avoidable if only the drinker had been more responsible and known their limits. And adhered to them.
I wish you all safe and happy lives. Be responsible. Save your SELF. Protect yourself. And then teach your daughters to do the same.
