I agree, a khaki mini from VV or J. Crew may be cute with an oxford or something once in a while… but I can hardly imagine trying to decide “which one?!” every day. I just picture this girl’s closet having a line of khaki hanging up. Yikes.

^^I’m really attracted to the ideas of Miami, UVA, USC, UGA/GT/Emory, Georgetown/GWU, and as a wildcard, NYU, and I doubt I would wear the Lilly to the NYU or Georgetown/GWU interview. I’ve always perceived it as a very southern brand so I think it would be better received somewhere like Georgia or South Carolina. I was planning on wearing the dress with a nicer, dressy cardigan but DG’s comment made me think and now I’m planning on finding a black blazer with camel buttons (though I can see where camel buttons might not look great against black) to tone the dress down but still go with the pumps if I decide to go that route.

Glad you’ve considered them! It would be a shame if the interviewer judged you on your appearance rather than your work. I’d keep it simple/clean so you can let your intelligence and academic record make the impression instead of a bold outfit. Best of luck!

When I interviewed for medical school, I wore a well-tailored Theory suit in a light grey with a white Theory shirt. I stood out because everyone was in black, their suits were ill fitting, or they looked wholly under-dressed. Mostly, though, I stood out because my hair was recently cut, highlighted and immaculately coiffed, my nails were polished with a natural shade, my makeup was understated but elegant, and I was wearing my grandmother’s pearls. These things are what will make you stand out as a polished sorority woman, not a Lilly Pulitzer dress (though I own 2 of hers in Hotty Pink- great color!). I think where you interview and what it is for will help determine what you should wear, but just remember that clothing is only a part of how you present yourself. I am sure you will shine on your big day(s)!!! Best of luck!!!

And trust me, you will stand out no matter what you wear. Nothing helps you show yourself in your best light like 4 years of sorority life 🙂

Does anyone have any hair products to recommend? Besides hairspray- I have that one figured out! I have long, thick, straight hair and I am always trying out different products but I never like them.. my hair always ends up crunchy or with some gross texture that could have been avoided if I just let it be! I usually just go without- but I’d love to hear if anyone has had any success with a particular hair product. Thanks!

I think the only lie I ever told a PNM was, when asked which fraternities we socialize with, “We socialize with all fraternities!” Not exactly a lie, but definitely not the truth.

for a casual pair of flip-flop sandals, which do you all think is cuter? tory burch printed flipflops or a classic pair of rainbows. I’ve had (and lost, hence my problem) both and I feel like rainbows are a little more comfortable, but I’m torn between which to get a new pair of. what do you all think?

I love my Rainbows! They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own, aside from my Nike running shoes. I also love Tory Burch (being a Theta and all!) but I think for the money you’re paying for a pair of flip-flops, Rainbows are the way to go.

I agree! I have the rubber Tory flip flops and almost never wear them, because my rainbows (and Kino’s, a tiny-yet-famous sandal shop in Key West) are so much more comfortable for a casual look. However, I love all things Tory, and I have the Miller sandal in black and silver. I would highly suggest splurging on these, they really add a little something (and look perf with a pedi!).

I’m currently obsessing over a pair of boots from J.Crew and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with their shoes?? I own tons of clothes from there but not any shoes so I have no clue as to the quality! Thanks so much!

I have a pair of their riding boots from a couple of years ago and I am obsessed. They never gave me blisters and are very easy to wear. I love them! Also they have held up in some serious weather- I bought them my first year of med school when DC got like 6 feet of snow and they did great!! Hope this helps!

Dgborn, that is so great for you! There are many former marines in my usuhs class and I am so proud to include them among my friends! And I am so proud that fabulous Panhel women like yourself have the courage to do what you’re doing! Good luck out there-
I’ll see you around! It’s a small military, and let me tell you it is easy to spot the sorority women in uniform 🙂

I am a third year medical student at the military medical school, and I am so proud to be serving my country while pursuing a career I love! Rotating at BAMC and helping all the wounded warriors is such an amazing experience- when you go into the medical profession, whether as a doctor or a nurse, it’s to help others- and it is an extra-amazing feeling when those you are helping are the ones serving their country!!

“Study hard, because an education is something no one can EVER take away from you.” This is what my mother told me as I left for college, and I am now in medical school! And while a man can be a wonderful part of your life, it is so important for a woman to accomplish things on her own. You never know what life will bring you- the best you can do is plan ahead.

Thoughts on swimwear for summer? I think Vix and Vitamin A make some adorable bikinis, but some of those bottoms are cut just way too tiny! If a girl has a great body, is it ok for half her bottom to be showing (obvi, not thongs) Personally I am uncomfortable wearing the cheeky style or Brazilian cut bottoms, even though my butt is pretty much perfectly toned.

Also, anyone know of any fun and unique swimwear brands? I never get the VS bikinis because you see EVERYONE wearing them, and I get frustrated with Nordstrom’s selection.

I would not be caught dead in Chacos or Louis, and I’m not the biggest Longchamp fan either(didn’t even know what Vera Bradley is- looked it up. uhm ew.). Tory Burch makes some really simple cute bags that are more affordable for school, but it is my personal opinion that investing in something truly beautiful and individual for school like a Bottega or Balenciaga is a must- Barneys has some really great ones that are simple and huge and that way we don’t look like a group of clones when walking to class.
For shoes in general, I try to avoid flip flops(true life: they’re #trashy, sorry bout it) in favor of simple fun sandals, someone has already said something about Tory Burch sandals, but on the Jack Rogers- just because Neiman carries something doesn’t mean it isn’t trashy, they respond to demand so if it’s within the Neiman price point and people want it they’ll carry it…. are trashy Florida people also incapable of individual thought?. Guiseepe Zanotti is also great for ones that are similar to Jack Rogers but better put together. Also slip off sandals can disappear during the inevitable extended blackout on vacay or gameday-so much better to have something actually attached to your feet.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned yoga pants- I refuse to dress up for class but I live in my Lululemons- so comfy and they make even amazing asses look that much more fantastic. American Apparel Viscose tanks and tees are also vital to my wardrobe- summer and winter they’re soooo amazingly comfortable. Stay Sratty ladies!

A bit harsh, don’t you think? Just because a young woman wears a particular brand of sandal you don’t care for doesn’t necessarily make her “trashy and incapable of individual thought.” It’s just a shoe, dear. What I meant about Jack Rogers is that they are not some tacky rubber flip-flops, and while the quality may not be up to the that of Giuseppe Zanotti, neither is the price.

I agree that we don’t all want to clones of one another wandering around campus, but once you’ve left that campus it is nice to take a part of it with you in the way that you dress. I went to college in the south and now live in DC, and I am proud of my sense of fashion and personal style, even if it is a bit different from what is around me. I’m the only girl I know up here who wears Lilly, and while that may not be the most “individual” thing to do in college, it can be in other parts of the country.

Bottega and Balenciaga make beautiful handbags, I just don’t find them appropriate to bring to class on a tuesday afternoon. I left my expensive purses at home when I went to college, after one bad experience of a sister borrowing one without my permission to take to the bar. For that matter, not every 20 year old college student has the money to spend on a $2,000 purse. If you are fortunate enough to be that young woman, great for you, but don’t put others down because their fashion choices are more restricted by budget.

So I had to actually google Chacos because I had no idea what they were– and I am glad to say I have never seen any respectable sorority woman at my school wearing those things. Gross.

DG: Jack Rogers are very popular in the south, not just Florida (and if Neiman’s carries them, they can’t be too much of a “trashy Florida thing”), and I love mine- but ladies, just make sure to replace every once in a while, tailgating tends to trash them and dirty old sandals are disgusting.

I agree on the dislike of Vera Bradley though, it is tacky, and a bit too high school. I had a VV tote in college, but use a North Face backpack in medical school (books are a bit heavier).

Yurman is getting so overdone- how special is a piece of jewelry if everyone you know already owns some variation of the same piece? My classic look is generally pearl necklace, diamond studs, monogram ring, watch. Ask for a nice watch for a graduation present- I adore my Cartier Tank and it is something that will last a lifetime.

Steve Madden exists to make knock-offs of expensive shoes. What’s sad is you feel the need to fix these cheap shoes with a hot-glue gun. Bless your heart.

Agreed! I’m a second year med student now but it always made me sad to hear girls running around the house talking about their cupcake majors because they were just going to get married and have kids- that would be their “job.” While my own mother has never worked since the day she had me, and I respect women who choose to devote their life to raising their children (it’s hard work!), I do think women should have more self-respect than to just be a gold-digger!

Not only is this unpatriotic, it is a poor reflection of your ability to discern colors. CREAM?! Seriously? As a woman with a fratdaddy in digicam, I am offended that a TSM could be this disdainful of our nation’s beautiful colors. NS.
