What’s really bothersome is that most of Beyonce’s iconic choreography is stolen without any citations of her influences. In one of my writing intensive classes we wrote a paper on Beyonce’s copyright infringement with her one video “Countdown” where she blatantly stole choreography from postmodern artist Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and two of her modern works.

First off, with any music video the choreographer should be given “praise” for the conceptual and innovative set-up, for the musical artist had little to nothing to do with that. Second, without any citations of these influences, this iconic choreography is deemed unoriginal and unethical. Beyonce’s choreographers have done this on several occasions. Single Ladies and Partition are two other videos that have stolen choreography and concepts, appropriated it and called it their own. When this choreography is receiving national even global praise for something that was blatantly stolen, that’s what’s bothersome.

What’s really bothersome is that others who believe Beyonce is innovative and a feminist idol for being a sexual icon in the music industry. There’s nothing wrong with associating power and sexuality with females, but when you steal material that isn’t intended to be sexual, than that is just being sexy for the sake of being sexy. Which Beyonce is sexy, don’t get me wrong, but to a certain extent it stops making a powerful statement and becomes more like a selfish act for attention. Beyonce is talented and gorgeous, but she isn’t a powerful icon is my opinion.
