Unpopular opinion here, but I think this also brings up a bigger issue. It’s not just about the guy making a clearly inappropriate joke, it’s about the fact that technology has allowed us to so quickly comment on things with complete strangers, to say things we don’t always mean, and for things to get out of hand. I am not at all saying what they did was even remotely acceptable or defending the guys, as I do not know them – they could be truly crappy people or they could be actual nice guys who were being stupid and said something they did not mean. But in our culture today, both of those things happen all too often. Anyone could go say something stupid to their guy friends and most people would not know, but we have become so attached to our computers, phones, etc. it seems normal to make “jokes” to the public without thinking twice about it. Since they are in writing, they never go away (even if deleted). If their future(/potential) employers do a thorough background check of social media (as many do these days), they will see that. That stupid and inappropriate “joke” could literally follow him the rest of his life, no matter how long that comment was up – 1 second or 1 day. There are companies out there who are contracted by other companies to do social media background checks and all they have to do is search a name or a picture and everything that person has posted on the Internet, every account they have created (yes, they can find those Neopets and Club Penguin accounts you had when you were 7) will show. My point is, learn from this guy and be careful what you say online – whether it’s on a public page or a “private” page, nothing is truly private on the Internet. Think before you speak and definitely think before you post. Just like you can never take words back you say to someone, you can never take back what you post.
