absolutely love this article. as a black girl, i joined a panhellenic sorority or “white sorority” as my family & other black people in my circle call it. i didn’t join it to “be white” (which is the most ignorant comment i’ve ever heard). i joined a pan sorority because i saw what it could offer me & how it could allow me to grow. to this day, almost a year after i joined a NPC sorority, my parents still see it as a white thing, & my counselor even said i had “racial identity issues” due to joining my sorority (i no longer see this counselor anymore for obvious reasons). i don’t see race in my sorority. i live in the heart of the south, & my sisters could not be more supportive & accepting of me being black. it’s like it’s not even an issue to them. there are only two other black girls in a sorority of 170, & they accept us just the same. a lot of times i don’t think it’s them that see race, it’s us: the black people. i didn’t realize how much we as black people are still so stuck in the “everyone’s racist, hang amongst your own” phase. while racism still exists, i can honestly & proudly say that i don’t see it happening in my sorority. i have grown as a woman in just one short year & i can’t wait to see where i’ll be by the time i graduate. super awesome article, & it gave great insight to not just black girls, but girls of every race!
