Actually, it was originally started by dudes on 4Chan…the internet message board… to troll feminists and try to get this faux “trend” and “social issue” in the media. They photoshopped free bleeding pictures, creating fake ultra-feminist accounts on Twitter and Facebook to get it going…and it worked. People actually started believing it, and the first I heard it being tied to any type of awareness campaign was when the woman ran the marathon bleeding. This ALL originated as a joke on a message board as an ultra attempt at trolling.
