I am truly disgusted. Even if there are inconsistencies in the events of Jackie’s rape, the main take-away of the article was the ABHORRENT way her university handled her rape. The point was that people advised her against reporting it, that she was isolated by her peers and school officials, and that rape victim’s stories are swept under the rug to preserve the universities reputation. These awful things happen to many women, at many schools. These women need support: from peers, from school officials, and from on-campus groups if they so choose. The way society treats and perceives rape victims needs to change, and while Rolling Stone’s article may have been handled irresponsibly, it’s apology is potentially even more destructive.
