I think now is the time to make it clear that I was in no way, shape, or form encouraging girls to give up their lives for their boyfriends in my previous column. I don’t think that’s the right thing to do – it is all about balance.

That being said, it’s also very possible to have a wonderful college experience while having a boyfriend. I did – I didn’t end up marrying the guy and it was actually a pretty ugly break-up, but that doesn’t mean that I regret it. College doesn’t have to be drunken hook-ups and one night stands. It should be about finding yourself, and if you’re a person who enjoys having a boyfriend, then you should be okay with that. The whole point of the article was to point out that women of our generation are shamed for “needing a boyfriend”. We’re told that our college years are for partying and living life, and that we’re wasting our college years if we’re tied down to someone. But I don’t believe that it has to be like that. If you enjoy coming home to someone every night, if you like knowing that you have someone to depend on, if you enjoy spending time with someone who makes you happy, then do that. Be okay with that side of yourself. Know that it’s okay to be the kind of girl who wants to have a boyfriend in her life. That doesn’t make you a horrible person.

If you have balance in your life with a boyfriend, then own it. If you’re dropping every other activity and friend to spend every waking moment with him, that’s when the problem starts. Learn to have that balance in your life because that’s what is truly important, regardless of your relationship status.
