I’m an RA and I often simply overlook this rule even though I’m a mandatory reporter for the simple fact of the matter that it isn’t my place to destroy the confidence of a victim like that trusted me after something horrible happened to them. That said, this rule needs to be in place so that colleges can have the long dick of the law smacked against them if they cover up or hide sexual assaults, which very much HAS happened in the past. At a school like mine where we work towards a safer campus this rule sucks and hurts us, but nationally we’d be so much worse off if it wasn’t there. Again, I hate hate hate this rule as it applies to my specific campus, but how else can we fight scumbags who care more about the reputation of the school and those enrollment numbers over the welfare of their students?
There are tons of fraternity and sorority chapters that pretty actively don’t give bids to black people with virtually no consequences, yet people think that somehow when trans people aren’t given a bid for whatever reason it’s going to raise a fuss? Really? All this does is allow a chapter who lives a trans person to give them a bid, when they previously couldn’t. If a chapter wants a trans person, why shouldn’t they be allowed to have a trans person? The arguments against this are akin to a large state school sorority chapter saying “Well we don’t particularly like black people nor do we want them to be part of our image, so nationally black people shouldn’t be allowed in because some day we may be forced to have black people (even though nothing even remotely similar to that has ever happened).” If you don’t like them, don’t let them in. I’ve never heard of requiring reasons for giving or not giving a bid, so, in the same way that certain chapters have maintained a particularly…pearly…complexion, simply say that person did not fit your image.
