As a member of the Greek community as well as an openly gay woman, I can say that I agree with you that this rule has nothing to do with sexual preference. The problem; however, lies in the fact that it disregards the individual’s sexual preference and assumes it, cue in the heteronormativity, (which is the assumption that heterosexuality is the sole sexuality or the norm).

It assumes that all girls who are in a sorority are straight, or at least interested in boys. It even more so assumes that all PNMs are straight, or are basing a large part of their decision on the boys the actives hang out with. Personally, I would not like someone assuming my sexuality and as we both no there is so much more to life in a sorority than the men.

And to be completely honest, these PNMs are more than likely going to be going to frat parties (and thus mingling with the frat boys) all this week, since it is Welcome Week and parties are abundant. And if Panhellenic is worried about the frats telling girls which houses they would fit into, they should be worried about them doing it at all of these parties, and not at the local Panera when they see an active of Zeta Beta Zeta with her boyfriend of 2 years.
