This is my first active semester and I’m drowning in all the mandatory events. I had no idea how much would be required of me as an active because NOTHING was required of me as a new member. I don’t think we need hazing, I think we need reality. If the philanthropy event is mandatory for actives it should be mandatory for new members. And scavenger hunts are fun! Don’t force anyone to do anything that could harm them mentally or physically but there’s no reason I should be blindsided by the significant increase in time commitment. There are at least 4 times more things I have to do (or go to standards).
I think the more important issue here is that we, as a culture, use fat to mean ugly and don’t understand weight gain/loss. The difference between being pretty and ugly doesn’t need to be pants sizes (it typically isn’t for men) and weight loss is scientifically proven to be unsustainable long term. There’s a whole host of real issues that affect our culture as a whole outside of one person’s (potentially a whole office’s) disordered behavior.
