As a UC Davis current sorority member, I’ve been waiting three years for this rule to blow up in Panhellenic’s faces. By outlawing “booze and boys” because it will influence young PNMs to think sororities are only about “booze and boys,” you are implying that we, in fact, are. It’s like saying, “You absolutely cannot go to McDonalds this week because we don’t want PNMs to think we eat unhealthily, because obviously we aren’t like that.” Well, now we wonder to ourselves, if we “obviously aren’t like that,” why do you have to force us not to go to McDonalds? Wouldn’t we just avoid it anyway according to your logic? By saying we can’t surround ourselves with men and alcohol to disband stereotypes, you are only reinforcing them in our heads.

I hate that no one has ever stood up to this rule. I, for one, have actually been fined for breaking it. $250. Two hundred and fifty dollars. That’s real shit. This fine showed up on my bill for going to a party with men, where I didn’t drink, didn’t act romantically around anyone, nothing. I simply just hung out with my friends in their upstairs area away from the actual “party.” My sorority made me feel like a slutty party girl who ruined their chances at any cute PNMs because of this. It’s like I had shamed them, for acting on my own will against some stupid sexist rule that only reaffirmed the fact that some sororities here are all about men and drinking.

This is the 21st century. I get that recruitment is important, but honestly, how far are you willing to suppress these girls to make your fake, girl-flirting, week-of-lying-out-of-your-mouths, as perfect as you imagined?
