That is very true. There are children in Africa that are in much worse condition than most children in America. I’m not sure how that diminishes anything about the story. While it was written in a light tone, the article is about parents who wanted to do something nice in memory of their daughter who died. I see nothing wrong with people wanting to talk about, and continue, a purely nice way to remember a loved one.
