Calling all nerds! Grab your cloaks! Get your brooms! Get your head out of your nifflers. There’s magical shit to discuss.
As you know (or should, if you’re not a muggle), the Harry Potter universe lives on in the films “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The movies, set to be five in total, take place starting in the 1920s and follow Newt Scamander’s research of magical beasts and the writing of his famous book studied later in Harry Potter.
Or so we thought. (Bum bum bummmm) It turns out these movies are *actually* about the bad guy before Voldemort, Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald, played by none other than Johnny Depp, is seen at the end of the first film. And today, as the title of the second film was released, it seems pretty clear where this five-part series is going.
Can’t you just make out The Deathly Hallows in the I, G, and A of the title? Yeah, it’s pretty clear that this shit is all. about. Grindelwald. And the guy who ends up taking Grindelwald down in the epic battle in 1945: Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Ever heard of him? Our favorite wizard is played by the dashing Jude Law because, in this setting, our boy Dumbley is quite a bit younger. The five movies, written by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates, will span Grindelwald’s rise to popularity and eventual takedown in a similar parallel to “Harry Potter.” And in that time there’s going to be plenty of drama and magic from characters we’ve heard of, characters we know, and characters who came before some of our favorites. Here’s a recent shot of the cast that we’re going to grow to love, and love to hate. (Be sure to click “play” on the picture for a ~surprise.~)
Yup, you just saw Grindelwald’s sign/The Deathly Hallows flash on the screen. And yup, over in the left corner is Jude Law-turned-Dumbledore, who is entering the scene right around the time he becomes the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts. We know he defended Newt and has his back, so it’s expected this will be a similar Dumbledore/Harry relationship. Leta Lestrange (recognize that last name?), played by Zoë Kravitz, can be spotted in the center, snuggling up to her fiancé and Newt’s brother, Theseus Scamander, played by Callum Turner. Now, apparently Newt and Leta had a little something between them at one point, so I smell dramaaaaa. And let’s not forget ol’ Grindely over on the far right, looking very Mad-Eye Moody-ish. Is my dorkiness showing yet?
The second movie in the series is set to be released on November 16, 2018, which means we only have a year to reread the series, nerd out over fan theories, and fantasize about a young Dumbledore. Don’t worry, in our heads, he’s straight..
