The comment you quoted also stated that I’m a believer of keeping things within a chapter. If you look at my responses to other comments, I’m very open about the fact that I have only heard one side of the story. I know that we all want to deal with things in house, but that only works to a point. As you said, these girls acted ignorantly, insensitively and inappropriately. Why is it expected that Ashley act tolerantly towards them when they did not extend that respect towards her? I don’t think Ashley was “Twitter famous” or had any reason to believe her story would take off in the way that she did. I genuinely believe she was expressing her disappointment and anger towards her former sorority sisters.

I agree! I definitely think that an open and honest conversation where both parties take the time to listen to each other would have helped this situation immensely. I, and I think the other commenters so far, chose to believe that Ashley discussed this with her sisters before she took to Twitter and left Tri Delt. This may not be true. I just went off the fact that her Tweet said “when your sorority sisters try to say racism doesn’t exist.” Obviously, we’ve only heard from one side and I hope that we hear more positive things as this story unfolds. I really appreciate the fact that you were open to what I was saying, by the way!

I doubt Ashley’s first move was to out her sisters like this. She probably expressed her discomfort. Yet they continued to make her uncomfortable. That’s not sisterhood.

Hey Veronica, I want to say that you have a really valid point. Intent can give a lot of context to events. I think it’s really unlikely that any of these girls are racist or think that certain races are inferior to others. But I don’t think it excuses them. Let me ask you something: what if your friend repeatedly stained your shirt? What if you asked her to be more careful with your belongings and she continued to damage them?

I wish I could “^This” your comment a billion times. I’m all for “chapter business is chapter business” but these girls acted in an insensitive manner. If we can be sensitive to refrain from mentioning our friends’ exes to them, then we can sensitive enough to refrain from dressing up as thugs on MLK Day (extremely offensive, no matter how you put it) and making jokes about their culture. I get the impression that Ashley has spoken to her former sisters about this before and they did not listen.

It’s interesting that you mention that there is a stigma to being able to go college on your parents’ dime. As a fellow Longhorn who is also supported by her parents, I don’t really get negative remarks. In fact, I have never really found myself in a position where it’s necessary to go in depth about my financial situation. My friends, Greek and not Greek, do not comment on money. Nobody has asked me how I pay for school. I’m sure people quietly think, “nice car… West Campus apartment… baggy shirt with Greek letters… spoiled.” But I don’t think anyone has really held it against me. I agree that you shouldn’t feel ashamed that you are blessed. I think you should feel embarrassed because this article is tacky and a “humble” brag. (I put quotes around humble because your little quip about the value of a dollar makes me think that you are at least a little stuck up). Hook ‘Em and get over yourself.
