As an African-American student that attends Sweet Briar, this article disgusted me. The author, to me, is no better than the people she attempts to call out in the article. While I certainly cannot speak for all minorities that attend this college, I most certainly can speak for myself. Do I think we are the most diverse college? No. However, do I think the college is making strides to change that? Yes, and I couldn’t be more proud of that. SBC welcomes everyone based on their merit and potential. Just as it was stated in the play “In Sweet Remembrance” (which it appears the author did not see), it is just as bad to be included because you’re black as it is to be excluded because you’re black. I came here because I felt welcomed and everyone was natural around me. I didn’t receive “minority scholarships” or “diversity grants” from here like I did at so many other colleges I attended which was so refreshing. I received an academic scholarship because they were able to look past my skin color and see all the hard work I put in which was meant a lot to me. They weren’t surprised that I did well, they were just proud and wanted me as a student (not an African-American student) to become a Sweet Briar woman.

    Now onto the article.

From Rush to Rehab, you are an American citizen and you can certainly say whatever you want about anything that you want and I will gladly defend your right to say it. Additionally, I have the right to say whatever I want about anything that I want so I’m going to say this: you have no idea what you’re talking about. You don’t really even have the basic story of what occurred right. Also, you’re generalizations (which I found really offensive) are completely false. MY family did help build this college and I don’t appreciate you implying that only Caucasians attend this college or that their families were slave owners. To me, that seems as narrow-minded as the student(s) who started this incident in the first place. You say you want our generation to “just drink and get along”, but your article seems very counterproductive to that end by calling us “ignorant little fucks” and making just as ignorant generalizations about our “Hampden-Sydney husbands leaving us for a younger model of ourselves”. You clearly don’t know anything about our Sweet Briar community if you think we have “ugly souls”. Now, more than ever I couldn’t be more proud to be a Sweet Briar woman because the women on my campus understand that this incident is unacceptable and are trying to spread love towards each other. We are “progressive, not oppressive”.
