Hi Danielle and the author of this piece, I am a female Work Study student at the Fitness Center, generally timid and I do not like confronting people about their attire, but it is part of my job. As such, I have seen a lot of “inappropriate” attire that I think is absolutely fine to wear, but I have to enforce the rules that the Fitness Center Director puts into place. About once a week I have to confront someone about their attire, and I follow the protocol for that, which includes offering the person a different shirt that is “appropriate”, only after refusing that are patrons asked to leave. So, Danielle, either the person working at the time did not do their job, or you are reporting the incident falsely to make the situation seem unfair. The rules in place regarding attire apply to both men and women, and as such I usually chase down more men than women because they are more likely to cut the armholes of their shirts ridiculously low, so I think the claim that the policy is sexist is inaccurate.

When I was made to confront someone at the beginning of the school year about their shirt, I had to ask my supervisor why. The girl’s shirt looked remarkably like yours and the arm holes were not obscene. The Director responded that any opening of a shirt that is not one of the 4 necessary ones that reveals skin below the inner crease of the elbow is prohibited. This includes the little triangle/fold piece on the back of Danielle’s shirt, slits in the sides of shirts, and crop tops. This is not a discriminatory policy; we do not single people out, everyone follows the same rules. I am sorry that Danielle is not allowed to wear her top to the Fitness Center, but neither is anybody else. Those are the rules and when someone enters the Fitness Center and uses the equipment they are agreeing to follow those rules, however unfair they might think the rules are.
