“What we do know is that this house, a chapter that has been on campus since 1879, lost everything they had spent over a century building in a span of two months. ”
and that is extremely unfortunate. From the recruitment video alone the house looks absolutely beautiful and no doubt has a history and a legacy to be told. My heart breaks for the girls dedicated to this chapter and their standards and values that come with it.
I think this is an excellent learning experience for greek life as a whole though, no matter how big or small the chapter, no matter where they’re from. The video posted after the update is pretty astonishing. I think what is more astonishing is that it is clearly recorded off of a members snapchat story. Reservations and judgements aside, I think some pretty applicable advice here is “don’t do something illegal while you’re doing something illegal.” While the interpretation doesn’t have to be literal, I think it’s pretty obvious that recording that kind of behavior at all, ESPECIALLY on snapchat, was 100% the worst judgement call anyone could have made. I get it, everyone makes mistakes, but this one was big enough to destroy the foundation and reputation of this chapter. It’s a damn shame but like I said, a lesson to be learned nonetheless.
A quick Google search provided that snopes indeed proved that the law is a “myth” in terms that there isn’t a law that applies to Greek life in general – and even if there was sororities and fraternities are exempt. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t wack ass housing, gender specific rules that prohibit a certain number of people living together, ultimately affecting some campuses ( including mine) from having Greek housing.
I also live in Michigan and was unaware this was a thing – or was on the verge of becoming a thing. My college town also has the same deal about Greek housing because it is considered a brothel. I swear it’s not as bad here as it seems. Or maybe I’m lying to myself either way I need to GTFO.
i typically don’t give a shit about RunningMan challenges but this.. I give a shit about this. maybe even a few.
LuckyJo definitely hit the nail on the head with:

the mic drop is priceless. it screams “we just dropped the most fire recruitment video of 2015, we know this, we out.” and i love it.
Nothing causes the urge to bitch slap more than “so, do you, like, pay for your friends now?”
Sounds exactly like people you need to leave in high school (:
